These names are not always separate categories. Manufacturers often mix anchoring mechanism, construction form, material, installation method, and commercial product names. What Is a Rock Bolt?
A rock bolt is a steel, fiberglass, or composite reinforcement component installed in a drilled hole as part of an underground ground support system. Depending on the approved design, it may be anchored through mechanical expansion, resin or cement grout, frictional contact, or another specified mechanism.
A product name may contain several descriptors. For example, resin-grouted threaded rebar bolt combines an anchoring method with a bar construction, while self-drilling hollow bar combines an installation method with a structural form.

Why Rock Bolt Terminology Becomes Confusing
Rock bolt names commonly mix four dimensions:

Left-hand thread is a thread specification, not an anchoring category. Self-drilling describes installation and construction, not the final bonding mechanism. The sections below first classify products by anchoring mechanism, then explain construction and installation terms.
Part 1: Classification by Anchoring Mechanism
1. Point-Anchored or Mechanical Rock Bolts
A mechanical rock bolt is anchored at one or more discrete points using an expansion shell, wedge, or another approved mechanical component.
Common terminology: mechanical rock bolt, expansion shell rock bolt, point-anchored rock bolt.
Typical construction: solid bar, threaded end, mechanical anchor, nut, bearing plate, and washer.

Resin-grouted rock bolts
Common terms include resin-anchored rock bolt, resin-grouted rock bolt, rebar resin bolt, and resin rock bolt bar.
The market term resin bolt is broad. Buyers should clarify whether the RFQ covers the steel bar only, a bar with accessories, or a complete system including resin cartridges. Key fields include diameter, length and tolerance, thread or surface profile, material, accessories, and supply scope.
Cement-grouted rock bolts
Common terms include cement-grouted rock bolt, grouted rebar bolt, and fully grouted rebar bolt.
Key RFQ fields include diameter, length, surface profile, material, grouting configuration, coupling, and accessories.
Supply-scope note: Bar components may be reviewed within Xianhong's product scope. Resin cartridges and cement grouting materials are excluded unless separately confirmed.
3. Friction Rock Bolt Terminology
Common terminology: friction rock bolt, friction stabilizer, slotted friction stabilizer.
Xianhong can accept these products for formal RFQ and technical review. The buyer or qualified project authority should identify the exact product construction and approved technical definition; this article does not determine equivalence between commercial names or product types.

Part 2: Construction and Installation Descriptors
These terms describe how a product is built or installed. They are not separate anchoring-mechanism categories.
Threaded Rebar Rock Bolt
A solid steel bar made from reinforcing bar or a purpose-made threaded profile. It may have end threading, continuous threading, or a deformed body with a separate thread.
Thread direction is a specification variable:
- Left-hand thread
- Right-hand thread
Preferred terms include left-hand threaded rock bolt and right-hand threaded rock bolt. Avoid left bolt and right bolt because they do not identify the thread feature.
Deformed, Ribbed, or Spiral-Ribbed Rebar Bolt
These terms describe the bar surface.
The Chinese term 麻花锚杆 does not have one universal English equivalent. The correct term depends on the actual profile:
- Spiral-ribbed rebar rock bolt for continuous spiral ribs
- Deformed rebar rock bolt for a general deformed-bar profile
- Ribbed rebar rock bolt when ribs are the defining feature
The term twist bolt is not recommended.
Hollow Bar Anchor
A hollow bar anchor has an internal grout passage and may be installed in a pre-drilled hole. Common terms include hollow bar anchor, groutable hollow bar, and hollow-core rock bolt. Hollow bolt is too broad for an RFQ.
Self-Drilling Hollow Bar or SDA
A self-drilling hollow bar uses a hollow threaded bar and sacrificial drill bit. Common terms include self-drilling anchor, SDA, self-drilling hollow bar, and self-drilling rock bolt. A hollow bar is not automatically self-drilling; buyers should confirm the bit, coupling, thread system, and grout passage.
Some R-type rope thread systems may be described by manufacturers with reference to ISO 10208. That standard defines dimensions and tolerances for left-hand rope threads used on rock-drilling equipment; it is not a complete SDA product-system standard.
Cable Bolt and Energy-Absorbing Bolt
Cable bolts use steel strand rather than solid bar. Energy-absorbing bolts use specialized yielding or deformation mechanisms. Both should be identified by approved specifications and exact technical or commercial names.
